Expect crowds, music, and temple queues — especially at Banke Bihari. A local guide is the difference between a peaceful darshan and a confusing rush. We plan VIP-style timing (better hours, not illegal skipping of security) and rest for elders.
Janmashtami and Holi in Braj are intense and beautiful. Book rooms and a guide weeks ahead. ISKCON Vrindavan is often easier for first-time international visitors who want English kirtan and a clear campus.
Two to three days is the right minimum. Add Govardhan parikrama, Barsana, and Gokul if you want a fuller Braj yatra.
What you will see in Mathura and Vrindavan
Mathura: Krishna Janmabhoomi (birthplace complex) and Yamuna ghats.
Vrindavan: Banke Bihari (the most crowded shrine), Prem Mandir (evening illumination), ISKCON, often Nidhivan (follow local rules; it is a sensitive sacred grove).

Banke Bihari and Prem Mandir
Banke Bihari darshan uses a distinctive curtain rhythm and can feel intense for first-timers. Your guide prepares you for footwear, donations, and staying close in the crowd.
Prem Mandir is calmer, especially in the evening when the marble temple is lit. It is a favourite with families and photographers. Combine both on one Vrindavan day if energy allows.
Suggested 2-day Braj itinerary
Day 1: arrive Mathura, Janmabhoomi, Yamuna, drive to Vrindavan hotel, evening Prem Mandir or aarti.
Day 2: Banke Bihari (early if possible), ISKCON, optional Nidhivan, depart.
3 days: add Govardhan parikrama (walk or vehicle-assisted for elders), Barsana, or Gokul.
How to reach from Varanasi
About 600 km. Overnight train is the usual choice. Road is 10–12 hours — better split or used as a private cab with night halt.

For international visitors
Temple photography is often restricted inside sanctums. Dress modestly. Keep a scarf. Shoes off at every shrine. Holi in Braj can be physically crowded and colourful — say in advance if you want a quieter plan instead of street Holi.
Guides speak English slowly and explain the stories of Krishna so the visit is more than a photo stop.
