Gaya in Bihar is the most important Hindu centre for Pind Daan and Shradh — offerings for departed ancestors. Vishnupad Temple and the Falgu River are the heart of the rite. Nearby, Bodh Gaya is where the Buddha attained enlightenment, so many international visitors combine both. What Pind Daan in Gaya involves
The family offers pinds (rice balls) and prayers for ancestors at Vishnupad Temple and by the Falgu River. The priest leads the sankalp using names and gotra. The rite usually takes a few hours, not a full day, unless you add more shrines.
You do not need to shop for samagri in the lanes; we arrange materials. Wear simple, respectful clothes. Foreign relatives are welcome to watch or participate as the family prefers.
Vishnupad Temple and Falgu River
Vishnupad is believed to hold Lord Vishnu’s footprint. Falgu is the sacred river of Gaya even when the visible stream is thin. Your priest will tell you where to sit and when to offer.
Photography rules inside the temple can be strict. Follow the panda and coordinator.
Bodh Gaya for the same trip
Bodh Gaya (Mahabodhi Temple, Bodhi Tree, monasteries) is a short drive from Gaya city. It is a UNESCO site and easy to add as a half-day for international guests.
Museum and temple closing days vary. We put Bodh Gaya after Pind Daan when energy remains, or on a second morning if you stay overnight.
Same-day vs overnight from Varanasi
Same day: very early departure from Varanasi, rites in Gaya, return at night. Common for families with limited leave.
Overnight: rest after the ceremony, optional Bodh Gaya at sunrise, return next day. Better for seniors and first-time visitors from abroad.
Road time is several hours each way. We use a private AC cab, not a last-minute shared jeep.

Bring passport copies if asked at hotels. Tell us who will sit as karta (the family member leading the rite). English explanation is standard with our team. We keep the schedule honest so you are not promised a “one hour” ceremony that actually needs half a day in peak Pitru Paksha.
