Gaurikund and Sonprayag are the last road heads for Kedarnath. This page is the last-mile explainer — full km from Varanasi is on the main distance blog.
Gaurikund and Sonprayag are the last motorable points for most Kedarnath yatris. From there it is about 16 km to the temple by trek, pony, palki or helicopter (from Phata/Guptkashi, not from Varanasi airport).
Varanasi to Kedarnath total road distance is still about 850–900 km via Haridwar — not a short hop to Gaurikund alone. Full figures, train and “how to go”: Varanasi to Kedarnath distance 850–900 km.
Why people search Gaurikund / Sonprayag from Varanasi
They are planning the hill-road last day. There is no direct Varanasi–Gaurikund tourist bus that replaces Haridwar. Typical path: Varanasi → Haridwar/Rishikesh/Dehradun → hill cab → Sonprayag/Gaurikund → 16 km to Kedarnath.
Prayagraj to Gaurikund is also a long Himalayan approach via the same Uttarakhand corridor — not a same-day Sangam-to-temple drive. We plan from Varanasi as the usual start.
